Here's how I start a crochet piece with a magic circle. I'll show you how I make the magic circle and complete the first round of stitches.

Making the magic circle:

Take the end of your yarn in your non-hook hand.

Wrap the working yarn loosely around your fingers and back over the yarn tail making a large loop.

Insert hook through the large loop and pick up the working yarn.

Pull through a loop.

Chain 1.

Now you have a magic circle and are ready to start the first round of stitches.

Crocheting the first round of stitches:

To make the first round of SC, pull up a loop through the circle ...

... and complete the SC as usual.

Crochet the required number of stitches. Here, there are six.

Pull on the yarn tail and the circle will start to close.

Wiggle the stitches along a bit if necessary, and pull tightly and the circle should close with no gap.

To join the round, slip stitch into the first stitch ...
